How to Have a Difficult Conversation

£5.00

Description

Within this training, we will explore why having difficult conversations is an inevitable part of social care work.

Key takeaways from the course.

  • Sensitive Topics: Social care often involves discussing highly personal and sensitive issues, like financial difficulties, neglect, or mental health struggles. Being able to approach these topics with empathy and clarity is essential to ensure open communication and build trust with service users.
  • Disagreements and Conflict:  Sometimes, disagreements about care plans or service provision arise. Having the skills to manage conflict allows you to find solutions that work for everyone involved and minimise emotional escalation.
  • Delivering Bad News:  Unfortunately, social workers sometimes have to deliver difficult news, such as informing someone about limited resources or changes in their care. Knowing how to communicate such news sensitively can help people process the information and navigate the situation.
  • Protecting Vulnerable People:  Social care professionals often work with vulnerable individuals who may struggle to express themselves clearly. Understanding how to have difficult conversations effectively allows you to gather accurate information, identify potential risks, and ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Maintaining Professional Boundaries:  Difficult conversations can be emotionally charged. Having strong communication skills helps you maintain professional boundaries while still showing compassion and understanding.

In this practical module, we will consider how to navigate challenging situations more effectively by honing our communication skills. This leads to better outcomes for service users, reduces stress for yourself, and fosters stronger working relationships with colleagues and families.

This option is aimed at an audience with prior knowledge of the subject and isn’t suitable for.  Those that are new to the subject would be better with our standard course.

Need more time?

We recognise that sometimes groups need more time for discussions and group work. This can mean that a two-hour session is just not long enough to explore the curriculum and engage in question and answer sessions. So we are you offering the opportunity to extend the session by an hour to allow your trainees the chance to explore the curriculum fully!
