Description

Loss, Transition, Bereavement and Change - Training for Foster Carers and Social Workers

Loss, transition and change are integral parts of being a looked after child. This course aims to help foster carers fully understand their impact upon children, young people and families.

We will look at psychological theories and research to inform our understanding of the topic. We will consider the role that foster carers have in supporting children and young people to deal with the loss, transition and change they have experienced so far in life, as well as the changes still to come.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. To improve understanding and develop practical strategies to help support children and young people who experience significant loss or bereavement in their lives
  2. Understand more about the responses to the loss experienced by children, including bereavement, separation, divorce and illness
  3. Be able to apply a range of practical support systems to children and families dealing with loss
  4. Understand how to apply an effective approach to working with children and families where loss has occurred
  5. Identify the range of support available to bereaved children and families

This course is for Foster Carers and Adopters as well as their Supervising Social Workers. It is also suitable for Residential Child Care Workers (RCCW) and residential team managers from mainstream, short-breaks and outreach services.

Format: This is a live training session through the platform "Zoom". It includes taught sections, small group work, work in pairs, and whole group discussions.

Hand-outs & Certificates: Downloadable course notes and certificates of attendance are provided.

Need more time?

We recognise that sometimes groups need more time for discussions and group work. This can mean that a two-hour session is just not long enough to explore the curriculum and engage in question and answer sessions. So we are you offering the opportunity to extend the session by an hour to allow your trainees the chance to explore the curriculum fully!
