Description
This is the second instalment of a vital five-part PACE series and builds on the Foundations in Trauma-Informed Approaches module.
This course integrates de-escalation skills with Trauma-Informed Approaches (TIA), equipping professionals to respond to escalating situations safely, respectfully and effectively. It recognises how past trauma shapes stress responses and behaviour, and supports staff to prevent crises, reduce re-traumatisation and maintain safer environments for everyone involved.
Core Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
-
Understand trauma under stress: Recognise trauma responses, including fight, flight and freeze, and understand how trauma alters perception, communication and behaviour during escalation.
-
Apply trauma-informed principles: Use the core principles of trauma-informed practice — safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment — in high-pressure situations.
-
Strengthen self-regulation: Identify personal triggers and communication patterns, using grounding and reflective strategies to remain calm and emotionally available during crises.
-
Recognise early escalation: Identify stages of the escalation cycle and recognise early verbal and non-verbal warning signs to support early intervention.
-
Use effective de-escalation strategies: Apply verbal and non-verbal techniques such as active listening, empathy, validation and non-threatening body language to safely reduce intensity.
-
Promote choice and control: Use practical strategies to restore autonomy and reduce power struggles, even in restrictive or high-risk contexts.
-
Support safety and recovery: Apply safety planning and post-incident debriefing approaches that support learning, wellbeing and team resilience.
