Description
This is the second instalment of a vital five-part series in PACE.
A course on de-escalation skills integrated with Trauma-Informed approaches (TIA) is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and practical strategies to manage escalating behaviours respectfully and safely, recognising the impact of past trauma on an individual's response. The overall aim is to prevent crises, reduce the risk of re-traumatisation, and promote a safe, supportive environment for all.
Core Learning Objectives (Aims)
Participants completing the course should be able to:
- Understand Trauma's Impact: Define trauma, recognise the signs and symptoms of trauma (including the fight/flight/freeze response), and understand how trauma alters perception and behaviour during stress.
- Embrace Trauma-Informed Principles: Apply the core principles of Trauma-Informed Care—such as Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice and Control, Collaboration, and Empowerment—to all interactions.
- Enhance Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation: Identify personal triggers, biases, and communication styles, and develop effective strategies (e.g., grounding and reflective activities) to maintain composure and emotional regulation during times of crisis.
- Recognise and Assess Escalation: Identify the stages of the assault or escalation cycle and recognise early verbal and non-verbal warning signs to facilitate early intervention.
- Apply Effective De-Escalation Techniques: Utilise verbal and non-verbal communication skills (e.g., active listening, empathy, validating feelings, and non-confrontational body language) to calm agitated individuals safely.
- Empowerment and Choice: Implement strategies to give individuals choice and control (even in small ways) to shift the power dynamic and prevent feelings of helplessness.
- Ensure Safety and Debriefing: Articulate safety strategies for themselves and others, and learn appropriate debriefing and reflective practice methods for post-crisis situations to support staff well-being.
