This foundational course introduces the core principles of Trauma-Informed Approaches (TIA) and provides a shared framework for working more safely and effectively with adults affected by trauma. It builds the knowledge and confidence needed to recognise trauma, reduce re-traumatisation, and improve engagement across services.
The training supports participants to:
Understanding Trauma: Explore the national profile of trauma and its relevance to adult services.
Trauma Responses: Understand how trauma, loss and adversity shape adult behaviour, coping strategies and engagement with services.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Gain an overview of ACEs and explore how self-protective and self-medicating behaviours can develop across the lifespan.
Impacts of Trauma: Identify the key biological, psychological and social impacts of trauma on wellbeing, relationships and functioning.
Participants will also learn how to:
-
Recognise trauma and its impact on behaviour and communication
-
Promote physical, emotional and psychological safety
-
Support autonomy, choice and control
-
Identify and respond effectively to distress
-
Balance individual care with team and organisational wellbeing
