Description
We centre on equipping professionals to approach individuals with an inquisitive, non-judgmental, and sensitive perspective that recognizes the prevalence and impact of trauma.
The concept of "professional curiosity" is a vital skill in TIA, often framed within the PACE model (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy), as it encourages practitioners to look beyond challenging behaviour and ask, "What happened to you?" instead of "What is wrong with you?"
The primary objectives of this course are to:
1. **Foster a Trauma-Informed Lens:** Ensure that practitioners understand the widespread impact of trauma and adversity on individuals' development, behaviour, and engagement with services.
2. **Develop Professional Curiosity:** Equip participants with the skills to approach clients or service users with genuine inquiry. This course integrates teachings from Dr Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication" and Dr Stephen Rollnick's "Motivational Interviewing," equipping you with effective communication techniques that foster genuine connections, particularly in emotionally charged situations.
3. **Prevent Re-traumatisation:** Train staff to deliver services and interact with clients in ways that prioritise physical, psychological, and emotional safety, thereby avoiding further harm.
4. **Promote the Core Principles of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC):** Enhance understanding and application of essential TIC principles, such as Choice, Collaboration, Empowerment, and Cultural Sensitivity.
5. **Mastering Professional Curiosity Skills**
Participants will use non-judgmental inquiry to reframe challenging behaviours, focusing on individual needs rather than symptoms. Learn techniques for exploring hypotheses about behaviour using the "PACE" framework to identify strengths and resilience, considering contextual factors.
6. **Applying Trauma-Informed Communication**
Participants will gain confidence in utilizing trauma-informed communication techniques to build trust and promote emotional and relational safety. They will develop skills in active listening, empathetic responding (the "E" in PACE), establishing clear and transparent boundaries, and managing difficult conversations without triggering a client's trauma response.
**Who Is This Course For:** This course provides an in-depth exploration of trauma-informed care and communication. It is specifically designed for professionals working with vulnerable populations, including those in healthcare, social services, education, and community services.
**Format:** The training will be conducted live via Zoom and will include taught sections, small group activities, pair work, and whole-group discussions.
**Handouts & Certificates:** Participants will have access to a downloadable resource library and will receive certificates of attendance.
