Description
This course equips professionals to approach adults with an inquisitive, non-judgmental and trauma-informed stance, recognising how adversity and trauma shape behaviour, communication and engagement with services.
Professional curiosity is a core skill in Trauma-Informed Approaches (TIA) and is closely aligned with the PACE model (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy). It supports practitioners to look beyond presenting behaviour and ask “What has happened to you?” rather than “What is wrong with you?”, reducing blame and increasing safety and understanding.
Course Objectives
-
Apply a trauma-informed lens
Develop a clear understanding of how trauma and adversity affect development, behaviour, relationships and engagement with adult services. -
Develop professional curiosity
Build skills in respectful, purposeful inquiry that supports understanding rather than interrogation. The course draws on principles from Nonviolent Communication (Marshall Rosenberg) and Motivational Interviewing (Stephen Rollnick) to support effective communication in emotionally charged situations. -
Reduce re-traumatisation
Learn how to interact and intervene in ways that prioritise physical, psychological and emotional safety, minimising the risk of re-triggering trauma responses. -
Embed trauma-informed principles
Strengthen the practical application of core TIC principles, including choice, collaboration, empowerment and cultural sensitivity. -
Use curiosity to understand behaviour
Apply non-judgmental inquiry to explore the meaning behind behaviour, using the PACE framework to identify needs, strengths, resilience and contextual influences. -
Strengthen trauma-informed communication
Develop confidence in active listening, empathetic responding, transparent boundary-setting and managing difficult conversations without escalating distress or defensiveness.
