This course challenges the view that duel diagnosis is generally regarded as a difficult presentation to treat. We aim to give a foundation of knowledge on how to support clients that frequently may be resistant to the idea of illness, disillusioned with conventional medication and resigned to “Self-medicating”.

This course ensures that participants are able to:

  1. Investigate situations sufficiently and make reasonable judgements about whether individuals are demonstrating behaviours consistent with psychoactive substances and / or co-existing mental health problems.
  2. Obtain specialist assistance where they feel unable to make reasonable judgements about whether individuals are demonstrating behaviours consistent with psychoactive substances and / or co-existing mental health problems.
  3. Respond promptly to individuals presenting for substance misuse services by using appropriate techniques and procedures, whilst still maintaining the individual’s motivation to engage in treatment.
  4. Assess any immediate risk to the individual and to others, which may result from substance misuse and / co-existent mental health problems.
  5. Screen for drug use, alcohol use, psychological problems, physical problems, social problems and legal problems.
  6. Have the appropriate knowledge and expertise to be able to make reasonable judgements and involve appropriate agencies when individuals are demonstrating behaviour(s) consistent with psychoactive substances and / or co-existing mental health problems.
  7. Establish objectives and options for meeting with individuals, carers and other relevant workers.
  8. Evaluate the suitability of options for meeting the individual’s needs and maximising existing resources.
  9. Acknowledge the limitations of current support services.
