This course will examine the trends in drug and alcohol use and the up to date laws surrounding it.  We also outline the affects and risks, the referral processes and the support services available. The focus throughout is working more effectively with young people around drugs and alcohol issues.

This course ensures that participants are able to:

  1. Receive a basic knowledge of the national Drugs Strategy (2008-18) and the youth alcohol action plan (2008) and how they seek to address young people’s substance misuse.
  2. Use selected national and local data-sets to understand patterns and trends of substance use amongst young people (including alcohol) and the reasons why young people use drugs and consume alcohol.
  3. Understand the importance of identifying and responding to substance misuse within the context of assessing risk factors, safeguarding and child protection.
  4. Have a basic knowledge of the types of substances and their immediate and longer-term effects and consequences for young people using substances.
