Safer Care Training
New Safer Care Course - Enhanced Spring 2026 - Currently only delivered by our lead trainer, Scott Henery
In the current fostering landscape, the concept of "Safer Care" has evolved. It is no longer merely a set of restrictive "house rules"; it has become a dynamic, proactive strategy aimed at protecting the child, the foster family, and the stability of placements.
This training description is designed to reflect the 2026 UK Fostering Reforms, incorporating the latest shifts toward risk-sensible (rather than risk-averse) practice.
This course aligns with the updates to the 2026 National Minimum Standards and the Working Together to Safeguard Children (2024/25) framework. It shifts away from "blanket policies" towards tailored, child-centred safety planning that supports a normal family life while upholding professional safety standards.
Learning Aims:
- The Modern Safer Caring Plan (SCP)Moving Beyond the Template: How to co-produce a living document with social workers that reflects the child's growing maturity and specific history.
- The "Delegated Authority" Balance: Understanding your rights to make everyday "parental" decisions while staying within safer care boundaries.
- Case Study: Transitioning from restrictive oversight to "risk-sensible" autonomy for teenagers.
- Beyond the Router: Managing "extra-familial" risks, including AI-generated content, online grooming trends, and peer-on-peer dynamics.
- The Connected Home: Safer care protocols for smart devices, gaming consoles, and social media privacy in a fostering context.
- Therapeutic Touch: Navigating the need for physical affection in healing trauma while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
- Environmental Safety: Practical home management—from bedroom protocols and bathroom routines to "safe-space" configurations.
Why This Course is Essential

- Promote Stability: Understand how robust safer care prevents placement breakdown.
- Foster with Authenticity: Learn how to provide a "warm, loving home" (as per 2026 DfE guidelines) while remaining strategically safe.
"Safer Caring is the shield that allows the heart of fostering to happen." All participants will receive a digital toolkit including the 2026 SCP Review Checklist and a Guide to the New Allegations Process.
