Impact of Fostering on Birth Children – Advanced (Zoom)

£370.00 3 hours

Description

Exploring the joys, challenges, and practical strategies for helping every family member thrive when a foster child joins your home.

Fostering is a whole-family endeavour. When a new child enters your care, the ripple effects touch everyone in the household, especially birth sons and daughters. While welcoming a foster child brings remarkable opportunities for building empathy, resilience, and compassion, it also introduces practical shifts, shared attention, and complex emotions.

Research consistently shows that the well-being and stability of birth children and family members are critical to the success of any fostering placement.

This specialised training course provides foster carers with the practical tools, communication strategies, and protective insights needed to keep your family strong, connected, and supported throughout the fostering journey.

Key Learning Highlights

  • Understanding the Household Impact: Examine how fostering affects partners, birth children, extended family, and daily routines - balancing the challenges with the life-long rewards.
  • Honest, Age-Appropriate Communication: Learn how to hold regular family meetings, navigate delicate conversations around confidentiality, and explain why rules or behaviours may differ.
  • Clarifying Roles & Boundaries: Define how birth children can act as meaningful co-supporters (through play and peer connection) while establishing clear boundaries so they are never burdened with caring or supervisory responsibilities.
  • Normalising & Validating Complex Emotions: Develop constructive coping strategies for birth children navigating unexpressed envy, resentment, guilt, or the grief of placement endings and separations.
  • Safeguarding & Facing Pitfalls: Understand practical risk-reduction strategies, including an "open door" policy, online boundaries, and precise record-keeping and learn how the whole family is supported if allegations arise.
  • Preserving Individual Time & Resilience: Implement frameworks to protect one-to-one time with birth children, protect their personal spaces and hobbies, and recognise early warning signs of stress.

Empowering Safety: Bespoke Safeguarding & Child Protection Training

Why Choose Bespoke Training?

Generic training can leave staff feeling unprepared for the real-life scenarios they face. Our tailored approach ensures the content, delivery method, and case studies are directly relevant to your sector (e.g., education, healthcare, sport, charity, corporate), your local policies, and the specific vulnerabilities and risks present in your community.

Our Specialised Training Pillars

We design engaging, practical, and compliant training across three core areas:

  • For Professionals Working with Children (Child Protection): Focuses on recognising the signs of abuse and neglect, statutory guidance (e.g., Working Together to Safeguard Children), robust reporting procedures, and the creation of a safe, child-focused culture.
  • For Professionals Working with Adults (Adult Safeguarding): Focuses on the principles of the Care Act, understanding different types of harm, promoting wellbeing, Mental Capacity Act (MCA) considerations, and ensuring person-led safeguarding responses.
  • Blended Cohorts (Safeguarding for All Ages): Ideal for organisations whose staff or volunteers interact with both children and adults (e.g., community centres, housing associations, religious organisations). This training highlights the common principles of good practice while clearly delineating the different legal frameworks, signs of harm, and reporting routes for each demographic.

Invest in training that transforms knowledge into action. Equip your team with the confidence and competence to protect those in your care proactively.

Need more time?

We recognise that sometimes groups need more time for discussions and group work. This can mean that a two-hour session is just not long enough to explore the curriculum and engage in question and answer sessions. So we are you offering the opportunity to extend the session by an hour to allow your trainees the chance to explore the curriculum fully!
